Salus University is holding a study on binocular vision disorders after cataract and corneal refractive surgery. Researchers aim to tackle current limitations including lack of attention to non-strabismic binocular vision disorders, incomplete binocular vision assessment, when a validated symptom survey was not used, when diplopia was typically the only symptom studied, a retrospective study design, and when the sample sizes were too small.
There is an estimated enrollment of 100 participants. It is estimated to be completed in May 2020. It will compare participants undergoing cataract surgery and refractive error surgery. Changes will be observed before surgery and 12 weeks after surgery in phoria, fusional vergence, convergence amplitude, vergence facility, accommodative amplitude, and accommodative facility.
All sexes, ages 18 and older are allowed to participate. Other inclusion criteria are:
- Cataract patients who are willing to undergo cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation
- Refractive error patients who are willing to undergo laser corneal refractive surgery
- 18 years and older in cataract group
- 18-35 years old in refractive error group
- Any race or ethnicity
- Informed consent and willingness to participate in the study
Those not allowed to participate have:
- Other ocular pathology that affect vision and binocular alignment in addition to cataract or refractive error
- Surgical complications that may affect binocular vision testing, such as a subluxation of the IOLs or macular edema
